It’s not every children’s film about a talking pig that gets nominated for seven Oscars! The story of a super-capable, super-adorable little porker named Babe, Babe warmed the hearts of audiences with witty dialogue, loveable and believable characters, and poignant life lessons that aren’t oversold. Based on British writer Dick King-Smith’s novel The Sheep-King, and told with a mix of live action and animatronics, Babe’s tale is a classic one: the struggle to find one’s place in the world. His new life on the sheep farm of Mr. Hoggett (James Cromwell) brings him to his destined role as the world’s only sheep-herding pig. The journey there isn’t without its challenges, however, as Babe (voiced by Christine Cavanaugh) must navigate a few farmyard dramas to avoid being sent to “Pig Paradise,” a place from which no animal ever returns – except on a dinner platter. Our hero is aided in his adventures by the maternal sheepdog Fly (Miriam Margolyes), the identity-confused duck Ferdinand (Danny Mann), and a trio of singing mice. Babe reminds us that, with a little bit of faith and a touch of destiny, we can all find our place. “Enthralling . . . A dazzling family entertainment with enormous charm” (Variety). Colour, 35mm, 89 mins.
"Babe is a movie made with charm and wit, and unlike some family movies it does not condescend, not for a second."
