VANCOUVER PREMIERE | Cult-favourite filmmaker Katsuhito Ishii (The Taste of Tea; Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl) teams up with TV advert directors Shunichiro Miki and Aniki to create another visually inventive masterpiece. Funky Forest: The First Contact embarks on an unpredictable, hilariously odd cosmic journey as it tells, among other fantastical tales, the story of three 'Unpopular With Women Brothers.' The hapless trio’s fortunes improve when they get a chance to go on a co-ed picnic with three beauties; the film’s 21 free-associative episodes range from nonsense sci-fi comedy to a dance-battle daydream. Funky Forest blows minds and defies logic as its careens across warped dimensions well beyond the normal limits of imagination. "The non-sequitur-titled Funky Forest: The First Contact is essentially a free-associative blackout sketch film with three directors that makes absolutely no sense...and is often centered upon prosthetic life-forms cross-pollinated from the corpus of David Cronenberg" (Michael Atkinson, Village Voice). "Delirious, disarming...The annals of strange just got thicker with the arrival of Funky Forest, a surreal sci-fi-musical-whatsit whose resistance to thematic or narrative logic renders viewers thoroughly — but not unpleasantly — bewildered for 2½ hours. Breathtakingly, often hilariously bizarre" (Dennis Harvey, Variety). Colour, 35mm, in Japanese with English subtitles 150 mins.
