Sledhead

Canada 2008. Director: David McIlvride

David McIlvride’s feature-length documentary tells the story of a remarkable group of Canadian athletes determined to prove they are the world’s best disabled hockey team. They play sledge hockey, a violent, fast-paced form of the game in which players sit in titanium sleds and propell themselves around the ice with sharp picks. The stories of these diverse men, some born with a disbility, some the victims of accident, are often inspiring and sometimes tragic. The film follows Canada’s national men’s sledge hockey team over the course of a demanding season as it sets out to claim the world championship, smashing every stereotype about disabled persons along the way. Colour, Beta SP video. 84 mins.
